Most of these protected areas have a Management Plan, which indicates the possibility of the development of sustainable tourism, which will not endanger the natural elements but will lead to the protection and conservation of environmental elements. The management plan of a protected area is the official document establishing its objectives and the management measures that must be taken to achieve an efficient, responsible management of the respective areas.
These protected areas represent important elements in the performance of tourism in Romania and the measures for the protection of nature are very well implemented, and, also due to the good natural conditions, it is currently feasible to conduct tourism business in a manner as profitable as possible. The protected natural areas are part of the natural or morphotouristic fund.
Tourism will be welcome in or near protected areas, if it respects the special character of the area and if it is carried out in the following fashion:
Map of protected areas in Galati county
Tourism development can help justify the establishment of protected areas in the marginal regions and can lead to an economical revitalization of local communities economically and traditional cultures. Below are presented the most important protected natural areas in Galati County, around which green tourism is growing and developing.
Balta Potcoava Nature Reserve was established by Law 5/2000 on the approval of the national landscaping plan (Section III-protected areas – Official Gazette 152 / 12.IV.2000). It is located within the commune of Braniştea, Galaţi County, in the major bed of the Lower Siret river and has an area of 49 ha. Its geographical coordinates are Latitude N 45º25` and Longitude E 27 ° 50´. The biogeographical framing is in the stepic region and the Ecoregion is the Steppe of the Romanian Plain. In the vicinity of the “Balta Potcoava” Reservation and of the Siret river, there are meadow forests and agricultural lands. The flora is represented by vegetal associations specific to wetland habitats: Phragmites sp., Typha sp., Nymphoides sp., Equisetum limosum, Juncus effusus, Sagittaria sagitifolia, Ranunculus lingua, Carex sp., Heleocharis palustris, Cicuta virosa, Buttomus umbelatus, Achillea millefolium, Capsella bursa-pastoris The biotope is home to invertebrates, amphibians, mollusks, crustaceans, reptiles and a large number of birds. The ichthyofauna is specific to the ponds located along the lowland rivers: carp, crucian, pikeperch, pike, perch, redfish.
According to the reservation sheet, the following are species of conservation interest: Alcedo atthis, Anas platyrhynchos, Anser anser, Aythya fuligula, Circus aeruginosus, Crex crex, Egretta garzetta, Fulica atra, Pelecanus onocrotalus, Phalacrocorax carbo, Podiceps cristatus, Lacerta agilis, Nat , Bombina bombina, Hyla arborea, Misgurnus fossilis, Helix pomatia.
The Tălăbasca Pond Nature Reserve was established by Law 5/2000 on the approval of the national landscaping plan (Section III-protected areas – Official Gazette 152 / 12.IV.2000).
The code of the protected area is 2412, and it belongs to Tudor Vladimirescu commune, Galati county. The surface of the reservation is 139 ha, the geographical coordinates are Latitude N 45º33` and Longitude E 27º37´.
The biogeographical framing is in the stepic region and the Ecoregion is the Steppe of the Romanian Plain. Geomorphologically, the region is a lake, and geologically it is a sedimentary domain. Geomorphology is characteristic of lakes in areas with low humidity. Geology is characterized by fine alluvial deposits predominately of sands and Holocene deposits (Quaternary). Pedologically, the soils are glued-alluvial.
Hydrologically, Lake Tălăbasca is a meadow lake located in the lower Siret Plain. In its northwestern part, it forms the outlet of the intermittent valley of Călmăţui. Genetically, it is a freshwater meadow lake, fed naturally from the Călmăţui stream. Climatologically, the average annual rainfall is 400 mm, the average annual temperature – 10 degrees C, the dominant wind is Crivăţul (from the North-East), which blows with a speed greater than or equal to 16m/s, the relative humidity of the air is 72-74 cmp/year. It has habitats that host invertebrate and vertebrate species specific to aquatic ecosystems. Many of them are protected by international conventions and European biodiversity directives; amphibians: Rana ridibunda, Rana esculenta, Triturus cristatus, Triturus vulgaris, Bombina bombina; reptiles: Natrix natrix; mammals: Arvicola terrestris, Ondatra zibethica, Vulpes vulpes, Lepus europaeus.
In all seasons, both on the shores of the ponds, in the water, but also near the dam, mollusks are represented by shells (water shell – Anodonta cygnaea), and gastropods (Planorbis corneus, Limnea truncatula) can also be observed.
The Rateș Tecuci natural reserve has an area of 1.5 ha and is located in the eastern part of the city, on the coast of the Cernicari terrace. It is on the verge of disappearing as a reserve due to both natural factors – erosion, and especially anthropic factors such as theft of gravel and sand used in construction. Only on the northern and eastern slopes can there still be seen lithostratigraphy of deposits, and a small spur still stands also on the western part exhibiting traces of gastropods and other species. The fossils from Rateș belong to the Quaternary period (1.8 million years old), respectively to the two divisions of this era: Pleistocene and Holocene. During this period, the sedimentation of the Scythian Platform ends, through the alternation of gravels, clays and sands. On the high fields, thick loess sediments have been deposited in eolian conditions, the material probably coming from the glacial deposits in the Carpathians. Formed on the stack of pre-Holocene sediments (loessoid clays, sands, marls, gravels), the relief of Tecuci is very young, 8,000 to 10,000 years old. The flora and fauna of the Quaternary are somewhat similar to those in place today. Due to the glaciations, the flora alternates between tundra elements and forests dominated by arcto-tertiary elements, this oscillation was made from north to south depending on climatic oscillations.
The species of flora and fauna fluctuated according to the evolution of the climate. It should be remembered that in this reservation was discovered the only complete mammoth skeleton in Romania.
The nature reserve is located within the Mâța-Rădeanu agro-fishing complex, on the territory of CAVADINESTI commune, VADENI village, representing in fact an area included in Pond Mata of the north-eastern extremity of Galati County.
Enrollment in the Euroregion of Romania: Central Moldavian Plateau
Subunit: Lower Prut floodplain
Access ways:
With light boats from the Prut River;
By national road no. 26, from which, at the entrance from the south in Cavadinesti commune, communal road no. 8 Cavadinesti-Vadeni separates.
PRUT ISLAND has an area of 62 ha during the time when the Danube is at its lowest level
The nature reserve is located on the Danube river, near the mouth where the Prut flows in it, within the administrative area of Galați. In fact, it divides the Danube into two arms, the northern one being navigable.
Classification in the Euroregion of Romania: The forest-steppe of the Romanian Plain
Subunit: the minor bed of the Danube River.
Access ways:
The navigable Danube, starting from the point of the Captaincy of the Port of Galati, or downstream: from the point of the Captaincy of the Port of Tulcea.
From Galati, it can also be reached by land: on national road 2B Galati-Giurgiulesti and from Vama point, on foot for about 1 km, then crossing the Danube by boat.
The Prut river basin in its lower area, on the territory of Galati county, is part of the large geomorphological unit of the Moldavian Plateau, and of the subunit of the Bârlad platform with its sector Covurlui Platform, which is in turn subdivided into Covurlui Hills and Covurlui Plain.
Three geomorphological units were separated from the fragmentation of the relief: plateaus, valleys, and the Prut Meadow. The Lower Prut meadow is characterized by absolute altitudes between 8m in the northern part and 3-4 m in the southern part. The relief of the meadow is generally flat, with a continuous slope from north to south. Transversally, the land is sloping towards the Prut River (east). The general appearance of the meadow is that of a wide depression.
The micro-relief is represented by accumulation forms (ridges) and negative forms (former lakes, ravines, ponds, and swamps). In the meadow, there are exterior ridges, such as the main ridge of the Prut consisting of coarse and medium textures, and interior ridges (integrands) formed along the former rivulets, and consisting of fine textures and to a lesser extent of medium textures. Geological: in-depth – crystalline and magmatic formations; Sedimentary cycles can be outlined in the cover: 1) Permian – Lower Triassic, 2) Jurassic – Cretaceous – Eocene, and 3) Upper Badenian – Romanian (Pliocene). The vegetation of the Prut meadow is represented by natural vegetal formations of meadows and forest, specific to alluvial soils, periodically flooded and with excess phreatic humidity. The meadows are made up of mesophilic and mesohydrophilic species represented by grasses.
The woody vegetation consists mainly of soft essences. Marsh vegetation is composed of Carex riparia, Scirpus sylvaticus, Typha latifolia, Phragmites communis, Equisetum arvense, Mentha aquatic etc. In water, holes can be found: Lemna trisulca, Hydrocharis morsus – ranae, Potamogeton natans. Rare species include – Nymphaea alba, Salvinia natans, Thelypteris palustris, Nymphoides peltata, Vallisneria spiralis, Stratioides aloides, Alisma gramineum, Iris pseudacorus, Sagittaria sagittifolia, Potamogeton crispi, Ceratophyllum demersum etc. Fragments of forest phytocenoses have been preserved in some areas near the Prut River such as Vitis sylvestris, Fraxinus pallisae, Frangula alnus. From an avifauna point of view, the Lower Prut River Basin is a very important area, as important herds of waterfowl during are recorded here, namely: Ardeola ralloides, Egretta garzetta, Egreta alba, Ardea purpurea, Ciconia nigra, Ciconia ciconia, Plegadis falcinellus, Platalea leucorodia, Cygnus olor, Anser albifrons, Anser erythropus, Anser anser, Anas crecca, Anas querquedula, Aythya ferina, Aythya nyroca, Fulrie, Himantopus himantopus, Recurvirostra avosetta, Vanellus vanellus, Philomachus pugnax, Limosa limosa, Tringa totanus), Larus ridibundus, Sterna hirundo, Chlidonias hybridus, Riparia riparia, Hirundo rustica, etc.
The protected area is located in the region of Covurlui Hills, whose relief is developed on Neogene formations, with monoclinal structure, fragmented in peaks and long bridges separated by parallel valleys carved in gravels and sands with intercalations of Pliocene clays, sometimes accompanied by crusts and landslides. . Geologically, it is characterized by a cover deposited within 4 sedimentation cycles: Devonian, Permian – Triassic, Jurassic – Cretaceous – Eocene and Upper Upper Bedenian. In addition, there are also quaternary deposits.
Within the natural area, you can find the downy oak, numerous species of shrubs specific to forest-steppe associations, associations of grassy species with the majority participation of grasses, the Romanian peony (Paeonia Peregrina). The trees come from natural regenerations by vegetative means, mostly, but also by germination. The average age is 48 years. The natural character of the trees allows the presence of fields in which conditions are conducive to the presence of the Romanian peony (Paeonia Peregrina), a basic element along with the other components of the biocenosis. The fauna consists of many species of birds, including large and medium-sized predators, included among the species protected by national and international regulations. Numerous species of large and small mammals find a secluded place here, optimal for feeding and breeding activity (wild boar, deer, rabbit, fox). Numerous species of insects, with an important role in furthering the trophic chain specific to the area. The protected natural area Breana-Roşcani Forest has an area of 78.3 ha, according to Law no.5/2000. It is located on the administrative territory of Băneasa commune, near Roşcani village, in the north-central part of Galaţi county, in the physical-geographical area of Romania: Fălciului Hills, respectively the biogeographical region of Covurlui Hills.
The profile has the following succession of geological layers: sands, gravels, clays, and loess whose age was located in the Pliocene. The relief is of the hilly type, with long hills, developed between parallel valleys. The forest is on the slopes of the Jeravăt brook. Habitat of natural forest with Quercus robur, Fagus Orientalis, Fraxinus excelsior, Acer campestre, and Tilia cordata from the hill area; 23 specimens marked by secular trees of the species Fagus Orientalis – a rare species in this area. The secular trees, in good condition of vegetation, growing in the Talașmani forest massif (quercine forest), are marked, and for each one a sheet was drawn up by Prof. Dr. N. Bacalbasa. Along with the specimens of secular trees are also the species: Fagus sylvatica, Fraxinus excelsior, Fraxinus angustifolia, Fraxinus prallisae. Around these specimens is also protected the buffer zone (deciduous forest). Associations of grassy species specific to hill forests are also recorded in this area: Corydalis sp., Isopyrum sp., Anemone sp., Geranium sp., Pulmonaria sp., Symphitum sp .; Endemic flora – Galanthus graecus (Balkan snowdrop).
In Galati County there are 263 historical monuments classified and protected by law, of which about 43 monuments are classified in category A, as having national value.
The built cultural heritage of Galaţi County, evaluated according to Law 422/2001 on the protection of historical monuments and the List of Historical Monuments approved by the Order of the Minister of Culture and Cults 2361/2010 includes:
The building that currently houses the cultural institution was designed and built in the last decade of the 19th century by an Italian architect whose name has remained unknown. Originally designed as a living house, it expresses the taste for the pomp of its sponsor (Anton Cincu) and his desire to create something very special, which will give the viewer the impression of “jamais vu”.
The importance from the architectural point of view is given by the style of construction, with the obvious inspiration from the neoclassical architecture, having a series of specific adaptations and particularities, which are found in several other similar constructions in the city and neighboring areas, including:
The first nuns settled in the woods of Buciumeni, according to tradition, at the beginning of the 15th century. Although no written testimonies have been kept in this regard, most of the old monastery documents being lost or alienated, it seems that around 1420-1430, during the reign of Alexander the Good, there was were erected here, with the support of the inhabitants of the neighboring villages, a small wooden church dedicated to Saint Nicholas and a few hermit cells.
After 1750, the hermitage became part of the Roman Episcopate. In 1809 the whole community numbered only 4 nuns, led by their abbess, Afia. An ancient document mentions her as a founder, also mentioning the fact that the patron saint of the monastery was celebrated the day after Pentecost, on the feast of the Holy Trinity.
Although the small wooden church burned down, it was not until around 1700 that the old place of worship was rebuilt by Serdar Manolache Radovici, the owner of an estate in the village of Buciumeni and later consecrated in 1718 by Bishop Sava of Roman.
After the Union of the Principalities, the abbey was abolished in 1860 by the decree of the ruler Al. I. Cuza, and the nuns were sent to Văratec, Agapia, or Adam, except for the very old ones, left in their cells. All goods were put up for auction. Completely devoid of material means of subsistence, the nuns remained at Buciumeni, headed by abbess Maria. It was possible, however, to keep the ordinances of the holy services, with the help of the ordained priests from the neighboring parishes.
Under the pastorate of the great scholar and patriot Melchisedec Stefănescu, former bishop of the Lower Danube, after 1879, the hermitage regained its rights of organization in its own administration. Through the care of the new archpriest, the church, a historical monument, was rebuilt in 1884, supported inside and out with iron bars, and painted by Stoica Ioniță Gheorghe (The Sinner). The porch was probably added at that time.
Located 3.5 km from Cerțești, in the village of Cârlomănești, we find the only functional wooden church in the county, a historical monument. The old church is a simple building in the Moldavian style. The roof, without towers, is currently being rebuilt. The newly built annex with hermit cells, in the immediate vicinity of this church, ends to the east with a chapel that preserves, on the outside, the exterior appearance of a Moldovan church: the trefoil plan, the tower on the nave, semicircular windows, unpainted windows, under the cornice.
In these places, in the second half of the 16th century, a shepherd was grazing his flocks, being the owner of these lands. One day, a monk from the “eastern land” suddenly appeared in front of him, showing him an icon of the Mother of God “with great powers, working miracles.” Obviously, the monk asked for protection so that the “wandering” of the Mother of God would end. The shepherd built in 1559 a small wooden church dedicated to “All Saints’ Sunday”. Around this small establishment, there gathered a hermitage of monks, in which our shepherd also became a monk. Beautiful, romantic, heroic beginnings.
The hermitage quickly fell into ruin, following the battles between the Turks and the Romanians of Ioan Vodă the Terrible. Only the icon, initially considered lost, was to be found, after years and years, in an oak! Then, “the priests surrounded by folks and moved by such a miracle, picked up the icon from the garden and put it back in the church that had been rebuilt. Many believers came to worship the holy icon, bringing gifts and money ”(The Great Geographical Dictionary of Romania, 1898). However, the first document specifying the location of the monastery dates from October 14 1653, where it is said that the monastery was built on the estate of Captain Adam by Petrișor from Tămăoani, Vasile Iuzbașa from Milești and Sava Rogojan from Grădinari. It is also assumed that Adam Movila was serdar and after his marriage to Teofana Dabija, he had 4 sons, who would have fought in Vasile Lupu’s army.
In 1695, the Adam Monastery was dedicated to the Sinai Monastery. From the inscription of the church, we find that in 1868 the iconostasis was restored and the whole church was painted; the pews were rebuilt, the floor was rebuilt, and a special place was set up for the choir. Between 1869 and 1870, a detailed repair was of the church was undertaken, and the painter I. Musceleanu covered the inscription at the entrance to the church which mentioned the year the church was founded, with another inscription written in Latin letters. The exterior decoration is very simple and materializes in a profile in the cornice area. A massive pedestal surrounds the church.
The current church, built between 1802 and 1813, has also suffered from earthquakes and has often been repaired and consolidated.
The Crissoveloni family was a branch of an old family from the island of Chios, settled in Romania, in Galaţi, in 1848. Over time, they developed various businesses and became known worldwide as a true dynasty of aristocratic bankers. The domain from Ghidigeni was bought in 1879, from Dimitrie Mavrocordat, by Nicolas Crissoveloni, who built a school on the estate, which still operates today, the village church, the palace, and its annexes on the banks of the Bârlad.
During World War I, the palace was transformed into a hospital, where Sybille Crissoveloni and Queen Mary’s daughters volunteered. The Queen Maria Ambulance Society was established here.
In 1948, the ensemble was nationalized, transformed into a state farm, then into a school for children with special needs. Over time, the former residence has undergone numerous alterations was vandalized, and is now in an advanced state of disrepair.
In 2004, the ensemble was returned to the heirs of the Crissoveloni family, who want to set up a forest tourism base in the area.
Hortensia Papadat-Bengescu (1876 – 1955), a great prose writer, novelist, and short-story writer of the interwar era, was born on December 8/20, 1876 in Ivești, Galați County. She had a fruitful literary activity for three decades, being the creator of the modern novel of analysis, considered a “feminine Balzac of our literature” and a “great European”, along with other famous writers.
The mansion belonged to Costache Conachi, clerk, steward, logothete, and velvornic, but, above all these noble titles, the forerunner of modern Romanian poetry.
The heir of the mansion left the building, by will, to the Romanian Academy. After his death, in 1900, the heirs attacked the will without success. According to the testamentary wish, the Romanian Academy established at the Mansion from Țigănești its won of Agricultural School. In 1912, the Academy built two side wings and changed the façade to neoclassical style. The earthquake of 1940 left its mark on the mansion, which was repaired by the Romanian Academy in 1942.
After the establishment of the communist regime, the Țigănești Mansion underwent a series of changes. In 1974 it became the owner of the Galati Iron and Steel Works, so that after the events of 1989, in 1999 the Mansion became the property of a company detached from the “Sidex” Galați Iron and Steel Works.
The ancient Piroboridava was identified by the great historian and archaeologist Vasile Pârvan, in 1926, when he identified the “Citadel” according to the indications of the geographer Ptolemy, 90-165 AD, who mentioned Piroboridava as an ancient fortress of the Getae (Dacians). “Following the researches continued by the archaeologist Radu Vulpe and his wife Ecaterina Dunareanu-Vulpe, in Poiana, more than 20,000 ceramic objects were revealed, including household objects specific to the Geto-Dacian period from the 1st century BC and I AD”, according to Laurenţiu Groza, director of the Tecuci History Museum. Situated on a hilltop, near the confluence of Siret and Trutuş, the ancient Piroboridava could become today a place that would give a special look to Galaţi.

Within these units, we have a total number of 11,701 places, of which 10,701 are in urban areas and 1,000 in rural areas.
The cross-border connections between Galați County with the neighbors outside the borders are regulated by 3 cross-border programs:
Romania – Ukraine – Moldova Joint Operational Program 2007-2013;
The Black Sea Joint Operational Program 2007-2013;
Cross-border cooperation of the Republic of Moldova with Romania and Ukraine;
In Galati county, urban tourism is strictly related to the anthropic environment and, in addition to the two municipalities and the two cities in the county, it can be found several ATUs in rural areas: Buciumeni, Țepu, Munteni (having as a pole the Tecuci municipality), Șendreni, Braniștea, Vânători, Tulucești, Fundeni, Tudor Vladimirescu (having as pole the Galați municipality).
Rural tourism/agrotourism is represented in several ATUs, even if the specific tourism infrastructure is much less developed. We can distinguish several directions of development of this type of tourism, first of all, following the lines of force of the road transport infrastructure (along the Siret and along the Prut) but also along the railway. The least developed ATUs for this type of tourism are: Corod, Matca, Cudalbi, Costache-Negri, Cuca, Scânteiești, Frumușița.
Cultural-religious tourism is well represented in urban areas, but also in rural areas, where anthropogenic elements related to culture and religious heritage are highlighted. The lowest representation of this type of tourism is in the ATUs: Gohor, Negrilești, Drăgușeni, Suceveni, Vlădești, Suhurlui, Smârdan.
Business tourism can follow quite faithfully the development lines of the road transport infrastructure, ie along the Siret and along the Prut.
Green tourism/ecotourism follows mainly the same routes, but with a different motivation, namely, the fact that there are also protected sites “Natura 2000”. Also, in the north of the county, in the area with protected forests, this type of tourism can be developed. It is found that there are real chances for Galati County (which has on its territory a plethora of interesting natural elements) to develop such a form of tourism in the future.
Special tourism is underrepresented, although Galati County has many resources that can be valorized. We believe that this type of tourism should be more in the focus of local authorities, and equally, in that of entrepreneurs.
Weekend tourism, with the exception of a few ATUs (Pechea, Foltești) can be well represented; one explanation is that it requires easier infrastructure and types of equipment.
